Not even subtle
A former Democratic president, and the ostensible leader of the party, should never, never, never resort to this form of dog whistle politics, no matter how stupid the question was. It’s interesting to note that President Clinton didn’t say “John Edwards won South Carolina in 2004 by 15 points, but did not win the nomination.”

Noooo Bill, say it aint so! Is it me or does he become noticeably ashamed of himself by the end of the clip?
Anybody who thinks this is a new Bill Clinton didn’t pay much attention to the old one. Sister Souljah, anybody?
Yes, I remember that moment. But you’d hope that 12 years, 2 terms as president, and an office in Harlem, America’s “first black president” would have grown beyond such a silly marginalizing comment.
I think the willingness to dog-whistle has always been a part of his political persona: the “first black president” reputation is something he acquired over time, and I’m not always clear why he acquired it vis-a-vis his policies. There’s a complex cultural and social story behind that reputation instead.
