The company you keep. (The GOP and the Voting Rights Act.)

One year later

I should have done this weeks ago when it was fresher, but I honestly just noticed that the vote on reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act happened almost exactly one year after Ken Mehlman’s noteworthy apology before the NAACP.

Of all the things I have to dislike about the modern Republican Party, that many in its ranks exploit bigotry is the thing that makes my blood boil and is capable of sending me into a frothing rant.

The threat to civil society isn’t gay people, racial minorities, or immigrants. The threat is people who perpetuate hate and mistrust of decent people.

Face it, some people just don’t like each other. Big deal.

It is a big deal. It’s human nature that some people don’t like each other. It’s another matter entirely when they try to flex that dislike through the power of the state.
